Trip during WSOP - a good or bad idea ?

Postby Johan@Vegas » Sun Mar 09, 2014 9:11 am

Hi,

I'm planning my third trip to Vegas (for playing NLHE tournaments) in the first week of June. However I found out that the WSOP is taking place during that same period. I'm not interested in participating in the WSOP but how will the WSOP influence the regular non-WSOP games/tournaments in the pokerrooms at the Strip (MGM, Aria, MC, PH, Ceasar, ...)?

Will you see more good (pro) players in these rooms too? Will regular tournaments attract more people? Will the Strip casinos organise more or less tournaments due to this huge event? Or won't you notice the difference?

In other words, is it a good timing for a non-pro to come to Vegas when the WSOP is running?

Any advice will be appreciated ...

Thx

IMO June is the best month of the year to play poker in LV because virtually every room will be at their busiest. The competition can be tougher, especially at the higher limits, but not unbeatable if you are a decent player. Because of this I've been going in June for the past seven years and I've done well and I don't think I'm a great player. One of the biggest benefit of the crowded rooms is that, if you find yourself at a really tough table, moving is a lot easier.

Several casinos run their own tournament series during June. Look at the Venetian Deep Stack Events, Golden Nugget, and Binion's for events ranging from $200 - $500 (or more). You'll find a lot of good play. Many players use these events like a a satelite into the WSOP event the following day.

I always enjoy visiting in June as the tables seem really busy and you never have a problem getting on a table. Someone had mentioned playing the V's Deepstack events and I tried finding some sort of schedule but came up empty. When are the buy in amounts and dates released?

June is the time to go to play poker. I made 3 different trips to Vegas last year in June for a total of 13 days. I already have my 3 booked this year.

Just to confirm what everyone else is saying, WSOP time is absolutely the best time for any poker player to be in Vegas. The rooms are all much busier than normal. True, there are more good poker players in town than normal. But, there are also a lot more BAD poker players in town...a lot more. Finding a good game (cash, or tournament) is much easier. You can find some wild action games at smaller rooms when you wouldn't expect it. During last year's WSOP, I saw a 1/2 game at Luxor that had about $6K or $7K on the table. One guy was going into his wallet every 10 minutes or so to put another $300 on the table as he kept busting out. Sadly, I couldn't get into that game, but the other one was good too--just not as big as that one.

I think you should know there are PLENTY of live cash games and sit-n-go's taking place at the RIO during the WSOP events that have nothing to do with the WSOP itself. You can sit at a $100 sit-n-go, or play $1-2 NLH while being surrounded by the people you see on TV and read about in poker mags....

While the other hotels still maintain games during the WSOP, you might find it a bit of a thrill to play in the same room as the Main Event, and notice a familiar poker legend as you look down at your pocket AA...then, after the usual happens,(the Aces get cracked) you can rub shoulders, take a pic, or get an autograph of said familiar poker pro.

I e-mail their tournament director and was told that the schedule would come out in Mid-March. I would expect that the schedule comes out in the next week or so.

I think June is the best time to come to Vegas for poker. IF you play cash you have a lot of great games to sit in. Tilted players after getting eliminated from tournaments sitting in cash games. Smaller rooms spreading larger than normal games. These are just some of the things that are great.

Vegas is poker Mecca, and June is the time everyone makes their yearly pilgrimage. I can usually only go once a year, and the first week of June is my choice as well.

PLO at Planet Hollywood. Mixed games at P-Ho, Mirage, Ti, the Quad, and Venetian. Juicy, fishy games EVERYWHERE. Rooms that never go dark. It's AWESOME.
