Need to know what to do and what not to do, I'm breaking the ice Friday, it's going to be my 1st time at a real poker table playing for real money lol, I'm excited

  1. Sounds exciting! My best advice is to remember that everyone at the table will be just as nervous and have the same fears/concerns as you will, so not to be intimidated by others at the table. I hear a lot of people say that they are nervous when sitting down for the first time because they fear they will screw something up. But the reality is that everyone else has the same fear....and regular players make mistakes all the time also, so new players shouldn't feel like they are 'alone in the shark-filled waters'. Aside from that, there are some simple rules and etiquette you should be aware of such as folding in-turn (never fold your cards until it is your turn to act), and string betting (make sure to either put all of your chips out at once when you raise, or declare the amount you are going to raise before you put any chips out. If you put some chips out and then go back to your stack to put more out, it is a 'string bet' and the dealer won't let you raise).

I'm sure many others can give advice as well.....and you can always ask the dealers. They are usually very friendly about telling people the rules, and you won't look silly for asking!

    Good luck!!

  2. I think what helps me relax more than anything is knowing that telling the dealer "Raise" in a clear voice prevents a lot of problems. You can then take your time deciding exactly how much and count out your chips carefully. I've seen a lot of newbies start putting chips together in their hands two players before it's their turn, then announcing the wrong amount.

Tip 2: don't assume the cage never makes a mistake when you're buying chips. That one cost me $100 at the Orleans.

  3. Like John said everyone makes mistakes...been playing for years and hardly, rarely make mistakes and couple weeks ago I flipped over my cards on an all in thought there were 2 of us but there were 3. (Maybe I'm just getting old lol) but it happens just remember to think about everything first. Wouldn't recommend head phones in both ears until you get really comfortable. Relax, make conversation, and enjoy the game. It's OK to ask questions everyone will help you out.

  4. @JonFriedberg thanks a lot
