Book up or Upgrade?

First of all, a bit of insight- I am a SERIOUS lurker due to upcoming Vegas trip (31st August) will actually be my 5th trip but this scenario has not occurred before. Hope this wont hurt any help I get to this question but I am the english guy that won AVP meet 6 at the imperial (as it was then). Still have fond memories of hitting a set of kings to knock yappy dave out on the final table. Lol. Was a really well run event with Las Vegas Michael doing the announcements. Anyway, on to my question:

An unusual situation has occurred. It starts off with a friend deciding he wants to go to Vegas for his 30th. 6 of us agree to go but 1 can't book up till he gets his redundancy cheque. I agree to book my flight seperate and and ill book the hotel with him when he has the cash (he's getting £7000 so should be cool). Anyway, he backs out due to losing the full £7000 playing roulette in one drunken disaster of a night. Now I have a flight and no room booked. The others are booked in rooms for 2. The question is "do I wait till we arrive and upgrade one of their rooms to accommodate me/ book one for myself when I arrive or bite the bullet and book a single room now?" -

Staying at harrahs-will not give me any idea on prices on the day.

Booking a single now is around £420 (if I booked this for this week would be £780! Don't wanna end up payin that)

Likelihood of availability? -no idea

IM GAMBLING BEFORE I EVEN GET THERE! Lol

Any sort of insight would help.

Thanks,
Joe

  1. Joe,

First, I'd ask your buddies if they are amenable to you as a third person in one of the rooms. If they are, then you could ask Harrah's if they have either a rollaway bed or any rooms with 2 beds and a sleeper sofa, Then, you and your buddies can split the room 3 ways instead of 2. Either will be likely cheaper than a separate single room.

In any case, I'd get your room arrangements lined up before arriving. August 31st is part of our 3 day "Labor Day" holiday weekend, so there may well be fewer rooms available that night than on a typical Sunday in Vegas.

  2. @Dap Thanks for advice. Yeah it was actually the lads idea. The fact it's part of one of your national holidays does make me a little nervous now tho- Vegas must be a popular spot for the weekend breaks. I have already tried to ask that question of harrah's tbh but I've been met with a stone wall answer of "we couldn't give you any advice till the day". So know its "book now or risk it" I think.

  3. If the lads are okay with you staying in the room, then have the person on the reservation call or e-mail Harrah's requesting a rollaway in your room. Then, you will at least have one available.. You can still ask about an upgrade when you arrive, but at least you will have a spot to sleep. You could also try the $20 trick when you arrive.

It will be busier than a normal Sunday, not sure it will be packed but it is generally a busier weekend given the holiday.

  4. @Dap Poker Coolio. Sounds like a plan. Cheers for the advice & GL at the tables.

  5. Book a single room. You may get even luckier than you think! ;-)

  6. @King of Queens - that was an advantage I have defo not forgot about. Lol.

@Dap - I checked the price out just removing Aug 31st and it dropped the price by a full £100! WTF? That much for 1 night? Oh well. Problem solved now.

  7. If it's me, I'd book my own room for Monday-Friday. Those nights are dirt cheap (under $40 a night).... That way you don't get sick of three to a room (not my idea of fun) but you aren't paying much either
