ok. was playing at the Orleans the other night 1/3 nl. I had been playing for about 8 hours and was on my last orbit. It was actually my last hand. I was utg with $675. I had 8d4h off. Just decided to limp and hopefully catch. Button min raises. 5 callers to the flop. $30 in the pot. Flop comes 8s4s5d. Checks around to button makes it $12 to go. I check raise to $28. Utg +2 reraises to $175 with about $225 behind him. He is definitely one of the tighter people at the table and I played with him the whole 8 hours. What should I have done?

Comments

  1. Fold pre: Limp call oop with 84 off. fold.

    AP; fold. The only hand your beating is 45. He's not check raising with just top pair or over pair. He as at pair minimum two pair.

  2. I ended up folding and he showed A5off. I know I would never usually play that especially oop but wanted to gamble before I left. Thanks for feedback

  3. 1. Don't play nlhe at the Orleans. If you have to go to the Orleans stick with the Omaha 8 games. There are many better places to play nlhe in Vegas than the Orleans.

    2. Fold 84 off suit pre flop. Do not try to talk yourself into thinking you are getting the pot odds to make the call. You are not. Even if you are in the small blind and every player limps to you, still fold. This is a garbage hand. On those occasions when you do hit the flop hard enough to play after the flop you will either have the deck crippled or you will run into a better hand. You particularly want to fold here because you are playing with such a deep stack. In this hand you are out of position which favors folding even more.

    Everything here favors folding pre flop.

    When the button min raises don't compound your mistake. Fold. You may think it's only $3 but one the pot is juiced so you will often get stuck in a big pot with the second best hand.

    3. As played obviously you have to fold here to the three bet on the flop. UTG+2 is representing a very strong hand. He also makes a good bet here because you have to make a decision to play for stacks.

    One more comment regarding your play on the flop. I like the idea of check raising the flop on a dry board with a weird two pair but your raise is pretty weak. There is $30 in the pot pre flop, v1 makes it $12. With your call of the $12 there is now $54 in the pot and you only raise $16. Anybody who will call a $16 raise here will also call a $35 raise. You are giving away some serious value. Also your raise was so weak and your stack so deep it invited a bluff. Next time raise a little more.

  4. @Krusherlaw. Thanks for the advice really appreciate it. Is there a good book u could recommend? I have been recreational playing for about 7 years but now want to get more into the technicalities of betting and odds and such like u mentioned.

  5. I reccomend Professional No Limit Hold Em Volume I. It's available from Amazon here;
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/188068540X/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1435691198&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&keywords=professional+no+limit+holdem+volume+1&dpPl=1&dpID=51G-5BXrC2L&ref=plSrch

    You will probably have to read it a couple times before it really starts to sink in but you should see some improved results.

    Good luck!

  6. @Krusherlaw. Ok thanks a lot. I'm sure I will b posting more on play and u can rip it apart for me. Lol. Really appreciate it though thanks

  7. @rustynuts555 You will probably have to read that book a couple of times before it really starts to sink in. I have ready it many times over the years and I still pick up some things every time I read it.

    Keep the strategy posts coming. The strategy forums used to be much more active on this web site.
