5/15 to 5/22/05 Orleans, MGM and Binion's
I tried these three card rooms based on the info on this site. Thanks to All Vegas for some great info.
I stayed at the Orleans and played about a total of eight hours at their 2/4 tables and found the competition very very soft. I played pretty tight and ended up winning about $80 over the time I spent there. I thought it would be tougher than it was, but was pleasantly surprised at how easy these games were.
The management there is good and you can quickly join a game when on a list. The hotel is also very good and priced right.
Some of the dealers there are very good and a couple are not good. One lady dealer kept looking away from the table while the game was going on and kept missing checks and bets. Overall, I'd say they're average there.
I checked out the MGM and was very impressed. Everything was first class: the dealers, the tables, the management, the page system, etc...
I played in a 1/2 no limit game there for a couple hours and found the players to be decent, but no card sharks at the game I was in. I got lucky and caught KK one hand and won a nice pot against a maniac who went all in preflop with AJ offsuit. I left after winning about $75.
I noticed they started some holdem tourneys there recently, but I wasn't able to fit one into my schedule. I will return to MGM the next time I visit Vegas.
I played in two of the 2pm $110 no limit holdem tourneys at Binions Horseshoe. The room is well run and the dealers are very good for the most part. The blinds rise a little too quickly for my taste. You have to pick your spots and take lots of chances or you'll get blinded to death.
I finished around the middle of the pack on Sunday the 15th. I was able to get lucky enough times on Saturday the 21st to win (well I chopped with the chip leader and we split the first and second place prize money evenly, so I'll consider it a win anyway)!!! The other guy had about a 20,000 chip lead over me when the third place guy was eliminated and the leader suggested we split the money evenly, so I figured why gamble for that kind of money ($1400 difference between first and second place) when I'm behind?
I hope to have more time for poker next time I'm in Vegas so I can check out some of the other rooms. Thanks again to All Vegas and all the reviewers here as it was very helpful in planning my trip.
