Downtown action
I was in Vegas with some non-poker playing pals so could only get to local casinos this time but things turned out okay.
Let's start with the bad news - the El Cortez, where I was staying, is the best value in town hotel but the worst 'card room' ever and is STILL a smoker's paradise! The only reason to visit the three tables crammed into an alcove is to talk with the guy who runs it who is a real character, looks and sounds like Billy Wilder and who I'm sure knew Bugsy Siegel!
Went to Binions at 1am to get some action but only 2 tables going, both hold em. Shame because the place looked very professional. Went across to the Nuggett which had 6 full tables, also only hold em unfortunately, but I played and had a good time. Staff and dealers were great. Played a tournament here as well; well run but no clock on view - very strange but not uncommon!
Most fun place was Fitzgeralds - now non-smoking poker room, like the Nuggett, but lively crowd and great complimentary margeritas!! The touneys average 30 players, $30 buyin, $15 top up, $15 add on - so play here for fun and not profit and you won't be disappointed! BUT keep an eye on your watch because no clock!
Have played at most of the poker rooms on the Strip on an earlier trip and in my opinion Caesars is the best - dedicated cash room, dedicated tournament room - both massive - and the picture of Ali flooring Liston on the main wall sets the tone!!
