Fun on the 4th
We stayed at the Imperial Palace because of the wonderful comps and it's location. The monorail stops here, and it is right in the middle of the strip which means you can get anywhere in a short amount of time. Once you have a player's club card, you get room discounts and every couple of months they send you a coupon that has various free stuff. The particular onewe used this trip had 50$ in comp dollars, free pulls on a slot machine, free car showroom tickets, free drinks at the pool, and free buffets (Buffet-->NOT RECOMMENDED DEATH MIGHT RESULT). We predominately played NL at the IP and MGM Grande, however, we decided to make a "Poker Tour" the first night. Here is our rankings on a scale of 1-5. We only spent 2 hours at each place, so you will have to take this for what it is worth.
Harrah's- 4 _This place was pretty cool. There was a full 1-2NL game going and three of us were waiting. The manager let us start a new game once we found 2 more, so within 15 minutes we started a new game. The dealers we had were a riot and they didn't seem as uptight as some places we went that night. (ie, we didn't get in trouble for the occasional swear word). They had no misdeals while we were there and there was a lot of rookie players.
Aladdin-3 _This place was pretty average. We had some great people playing so that was good, but the dealers were like robots (Slow Robots). The room overall was pretty stiff, and the quality of players was decent. To make any money, you'd have to stay there for awhile.
Bally's-2 _This place was loud, the drinks were terrible, and you could tell that there was a lot of money floating around. Sitting at the 1-2NL game was like sitting at a blackjack table--> No Fold 'Em Hold 'Em. I lost the only three hands I played (Pocket Kings, Pocket Queens, then Pocket Aces which tripped up). People were staying on anything hoping to catch cards.
Rio-3 _Went and walked around the WSOP for awhile, then sat and played. It was pretty much a gentleman's game, and was actually quite enjoyable. The room was a little distracting, but that was to be expected. I would expect a tough touch football game at the Superbowl.
MGM Grande-5 _This place was awsome. The tables were nice (having cup holders, marble sides, and a push/commit line that forced players to play what they put in the middle) The coctail waitresses were quick and they had RedBull-> Cool. We got up there right as Studio 54 was closing, so all of the drunks were stumbling out of the bar and onto my table. I was happy to make their pockets lighter for their journey back to the hotel, however, I later learned that the table I sat at had two other "Regulars" that were very good players. The three of us didn't step on each others toes as much as possible, as we were taking turns raking pots from the partiers. Another thing that was cool, was while we were waiting to sit at a table, they signed us up for a players card. No travelling across the casino. They comped us 1$ an hour, but it is all controlled at the table by the dealer (ie when your table gets broken up you have to give the next dealer your card.) We liked this place so much, that we often played here.
Excalibur-3 _The players were bad, so it was easy to make money, but the service was terrible all the way around. The third shifters were all very grumpy and you could tell that they didn't want to be there.
Luxor-0.000001 _Quite possibly my worst poker experience in Vegas ever. First of all it was a 1-2NL game with only a 50$ max buy-in. This sucked. It gave you no room for mistakes, you couldn't push anyone out of a pot, and you had to triple up at least three times in order to be respected at the table at all. I only saw one waitress the entire 2 hours we were there, and she told me to "Hold on, Honey, I am about to get off in ten minutes. I am only dropping these drinks off." Not cool. I'll never play here again.
We spent the rest of the time at the rooms we enjoyed the most on this tour. Repeats:
Harrah's
MGM Grande
Imperial Palace
Aladdin's
On a side note, after talking with several of the dealers, it is always a good idea to ask them if they have free passes to night clubs. Not all of them have them, but we found a lot of dealers would ask pit bosses for passes that got us into several clubs the next couple of nights.
