The Tour of Vegas Poker Rooms - Part 1?
This might end up being a multi-part report as I spent nine days in Vegas, started out at the Golden Nugget. The GN poker room is cozy despite being next to a little cafe and slot area. The staff was friendly and efficient (dealers and managers). There are definitely some regulars here but the skill levels vary. Played mostly 3 - 6 LMT and entered one of their tournaments. The tournament did not go well, called off most of my chips early to someone that I thought was making a move on my chips. DOH!
A short distance away is the Plaza Casino - played a couple of tournaments here including one where I chopped the pot with two other players for $530. Also picked up $20 in bounties for knocking out 4 players. This was most memorable tournament as I had a good number of chips early and...
I get dealt pocket Aces and go for the slow-play. This pretty good looking girl from London sitting across from me in seat 10 is in the pot. Flop comes K Q and one other junky card. She makes a small bet into the pot and everyone else is out. I fiddle with my chips trying to not appear strong and after a few seconds, make a raise. She ponders for a bit and goes all in as I do a near-Phil Hellmuth calling the raise. She has a KQ with no flush draw and backdoor straight draw. Blank on the turn followed by Q for two pair versus my Aces. Argh...
Go on to recover a good amount of chips and push a lady in seat 4 all in (I'm seat 7) - cards on the table show AK for both...suited...yup, she hits her Flush and I double her up. Argh...
Within two hands, short-stacked seat 6 I put all in with something decent (but can't remember the specific cards) and am a good favorite going into the flop but seat 6 doubles up...
Next hand, seat 8 is short stacked and I have an A 10...push her all in...she hits a straight on the river to double up. Did I mention that I ended up chopping the victory three ways? With over $120,000 in chips I almost busted out the the third player - he was down to 2500 in chips. He then went on an incredible run of suck outs to take the chip lead. The blinds then got up to 10 and 20 THOUSAND plus 1000 antes (crazy!) which made the game like a slot machine which led to the 3-way chop.
Things to note - both the Plaza and GN offer bounties in their tournaments. The blinds go up fairly quickly in both and you have to be aware of the size of the pots created by the blinds and antes...they can be substantial.
The Plaza poker manager/announcer talks a mile a minute and definitely has personality.
There are some cute red-head waitresses at the GN, mid-late 30's to early 40's but yum!
