Tournaments Cancelled Due To WSOP

After printing out the tournament list from allvegaspoker...

After sitting in the airport terminal passing the time entering the information for 50 different daily tournaments and the realistic anticipation of getting knocked out by a donkey with an 'any two cards can win' strategy...

After allowing myself to get acclimated to the time difference and fully recover from the flight... After planning out running around with my non-poker playing buddies and still making the 3:30 a.m. tourney at Paris...

I walk in the front door... Pass the slots.. But the poker room isn't where it was when I played back in December...

I ask one of the 3-card poker dealers... She points back toward the sports book and there it is... In big beautiful letters "POKER ROOM"... I walk with awe through the bar into a huge open room (which I will review in more detail later). I walk to the desk, reaching into my pocket for the entry fee and proudly announce "I'm here for the 3:30 game..."

"Sorry, we've cancelled that one during the World Series of Poker..." You could have thrown a marshmallow across the room and knocked me over... All of a sudden I knew how Clark Griswold felt when Wally-World was closed... I started looking for a moose to punch.

They handed me a flyer advising that from June 1st - July 18th, their only daily tournaments will be at 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm...

I guess they didn't want to totally kill their nice, new poker room before it got started. When I went through Rio, their poker room had a sign simply stating that the poker room is FULLY closed during WSOP.

There still seemed to be activity at Bally's, Caesar's, Binion's, Flamingo, and O'Sheas but I don't know if they changed their regularly scheduled events around WSOP.

So the lesson is: CALL AHEAD!!! You're welcome!

  1. Sorry Sam, that really sucks. You're sharing a valuable lesson with the readers here however: CALL AHEAD!

There is no 100% accurate Vegas tournament list posted anywhere, including on AVP (despite the fact we are always working on it). And during the WSOP, there are more temporary tournament "adjustments" than any other time of year.

But I loved your analogy to Chevy Chase and Wally World! I just saw that movie last week. Hadn't seen it in at least 15 years, so your analogy was particularly timely!

  2. @Sam Diamond

Rio's actual every other time of the year poker room is closed during the WSOP but only because they set up shop in the amazon room with many many many cash game tables.

  3. It sounds like the signage may be less than optimal if it doesn't direct the OP to the Amazon room.

  4. I HOPE to be in Vegas on 7/14/07 - 7/18/07, which will actually be the last weekend of the WSOP Main Event. What impact will the WSOP Main Event have on tournaments that I would want to play such as the Sahara, Planet Hollywood, Treasure Island, Orleans, etc? Realizing it is best to call ahead, what impact do you foresee? Thanks!
