All Vegas Poker is launching the AVP Weekly Showdown, a weekly gathering of AVP members at poker tournaments throughout Las Vegas. Join us!!

Do you like playing poker in Las Vegas? Do you like seeing all of the great poker rooms in town, on and off The Strip? Do you like meeting up with (and pushing all in against) other AVP members? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then we have good news for you!

Beginning one week from today, on Thursday August 9th, All Vegas Poker is launching the “AVP Weekly Showdown”, a weekly traveling tournament trail spanning many of Vegas’ great poker rooms. Each week, we will be choosing a different regularly held poker tournament around town, and encouraging everyone from the AVP community to show up and play.

The AVP Weekly Showdown will rotate casinos, days of the week, start time, buy-in, and even game selection, to accommodate everyone’s schedule, bankroll and game preferences. So while every Weekly Showdown event will be somewhat different, all of them will be exactly as much fun!

The first AVP Weekly Showdown event will be held at the Stratosphere on Thursday, August 9th, in their 7pm $45 NL Holdem nightly tournament. If you can’t make it to the first event, please come along to the next...and the next…and the next. You get the point! We promise a great time, some great poker action, and the chance to mingle with fellow AVPers all around town.

Our August schedule is as follows. Each month's schedule will be posted in advance in our Forums, where we also hope you will suggest additional tournaments for us to include on the roster. Please also follow us on Twitter and Like us on Facebook for information and details about upcoming events.

Thursday, Aug 9th at 7pm - Stratosphere $45 NL Holdem
Wednesday, Aug 15th at 7pm - Planet Hollywood $65 NL Holdem
Saturday, Aug 25th at 3pm - Golden Nugget $65 NL Holdem
Thursday, Aug 30th at 6pm - Flamingo $65 NL Holdem

Join your fellow AVP members at this week's inaugural event at Stratosphere. We’ll be handing out a limited quantity of AVP apparel, so arrive early! Good luck at the tables and we look forward to seeing all of you at our upcoming AVP Weekly Showdown events.

  1. Very excited! I think this is going to be a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to attending a bunch of these weekly events!! Will be fun to check out all of the different poker rooms around town, and have the chance to meet and play with a bunch of AVPers as well.

Thanks a lot to AlaskaGal for coming up with this great idea, and helping us organize this!

  2. Happy Birthday Jon

And I might try to make the Saturday Aug 25th one at 3pm as it's the only time I can really make them with my current work schedule.

  3. Thanks Photoc! Hope to see you then. Fortunately these events will be moving around days and times, so hopefully you'll be able to attend many more. The next beer is on me.

  4. Awesome idea! I plan on being at most all of them. Looking forward to it!

  5. Looking forward to these events!

  6. Given the controversy surrounding Planet Hollywood's tournaments on these boards I think it's extremely poor judgement to include PH in this series of events.

  7. Count me in!

  8. @TheGameKat
Just catching up on the PH tournament discussion.

I'm of split mind on this. I don't think AVP should be "promoting" a tournament or a room that has some controversy and I'd say questionable ethics around it.

On the other hand if you avoid all the rooms that people have a gripe with and all the tournaments that are crap shoots, it's a very, very short list of rooms to play.

  9. PH using promo fund money to guarantee tournaments isn't against the law. I think you will find other rooms do this as well. I can't speak for Jon but I don't think he would call for an AVP boycott of the room because they use promo money in this way. I'm not saying I agree with it or I like it but it wouldn't make me quit playing there. The games are soft and I like the vibe there.

  10. @AlaskaGal

I'm not suggesting a boycott by AVP collectively or by individual members. However when it is apparent that many here feel PH is at least guilty of questionable ethics specifically in terms of their tournaments, it seems to me that holding an official AVP event in one of the tournaments that is causing the controversy is problematic. Specifically it looks to me like a tacit endorsement of a policy (funding overlay through cash-game jackpot drop) which many of us find odious.

True, but by avoiding the worst of such rooms you might actually create an environment in which the list of rooms is less short.

  12. I love the idea !! I am only able to come to Las Vegas once a year, but now I will be able to meet of the lot of the AVP members in the best setting possible - at the poker table. Since the list will include a number of different venues, I can avoid PH. I am really looking forward to my next visit and this makes it that much more anticipated.

Wasn't Ceasars doing this a few years ago?

  14. This is news to me, and I somewhat agree with AlaskaGal about this PROBABLY not being too uncommon....whether I agree with it personally or not. IMHO, as long as it is stated within the published rules, it's OK...just like anything.

With this being said, the purpose of our Weekly Showdown events is to give AVPers a chance to meet up more often, play in tourneys together, and visit casinos that they maybe otherwise wouldn't. If people don't want to play at PH, then we will change this event. I'll leave this up to the AVP community....so please chime in here to give your thoughts, and we will determine if everyone as a community would like to change venues.

But let me emphasize that before taking sides on whether PH is doing anything right or wrong, please learn about what other casinos do with their jackpot money, and what is published in their rules. Too many people hear something like this, and then boycott a room because others are doing so...but don't realize that that particular room is doing anything different from many other rooms.

  15. @GaminDeBuci

Perfect!!! This was a key point of our brainstorming discussion as to why these events will be so fun. Glad to hear, and looking forward to meeting you.

  16. This is a great idea...I only wish I lived in LV. But when I do come to LV I know I'll have the weekly AVP on my list of tourneys to play.

  17. I'll be in town for the PH Tourney. Looking forward to meeting and mingling with the AVPers I enjoy reading about.

  18. @TheGameKat
Yeah, but, according to the PH gripe/thread...the cash players are the ones (allegedly) paying for the tourney promo funds. So a tourney is +EV @ Planet Hollywood. I'm in

  19. Oh yeah, gonna be out of town for the first event, but I will hit the Planet H tourney for sure! Let's throw in an AVP last longer side-bet!!!

  20. I'll be in town 8/8 - 8/15 and will try to get to the Strat. event. I wouldn't have considered it otherwise, but I do like some pizza. I'll be playing in a variety of rooms and tournies.

fyi re PH.. Most of the east coast casinos use their BBJP funds however they want to. It's typical. Sometimes they "add on" to a special tourney prize pool and that's when we have our best shot at getting some of our "drop" money back without hitting the ellusive BBJP.

  21. Also looking forward to some mixed action at the IP on Sunday. If it happens anywhere else let me know. ty

  22. A last longer is a great idea! And btw, welcome to the Forums Zalrymijnx! Appreciate your insight on the jackpot drop thing too.

  23. Cant wait for these tournaments. I would love to play against the AVP pros. I will defitnetly be at the Stratosphere and PH tournaments. As for any gripes about PH tourneys, I played at there 1pm today and enjoyed it. It's a good room and cant wait to see yall there.

  24. @RazCue
Yeah, but, according to the PH gripe/thread...the cash players are the ones (allegedly) paying for the tourney promo funds. So a tourney is +EV @ Planet Hollywood. I'm in
Actually the juice is so high and the structure so short it's still "unbeatable" unless the overlay is truly spectacular. And with AVP turning up it won't be.

There's no "allegedly" about it, it's right there on the tourney promo fliers.

  25. Allegedly was in reference to illegality or impropriety that has been aggressively repeated by a few AVP'ers.

  26. @RazCue

I think the most aggressive repeated statement on these boards is that the practice is unethical. Institutionalized angle shooting if you like. Like most questions of ethics not all will agree.

  27. Right on, Mr Kat. I guess that when it come to the "Jackpot" or "Promotions" it's all immaterial to me. It's just dead money. I've got some lifelong runbad with those dollars. Never had a qualifying bad beat (in a bbjp room), nor high-hand of the day or shift. Got paid for quads a few times. (huge pots and promo bucks). But as far as I'm concerned the drops, rake + promo are way too much at the Caesar's Entertainment rooms, so I mostly avoid them. Friends from out of town love those places, and my Total Rewards card benefits from their alcohol inspired late night slot sessions.

  28. Tomorrow night, 7pm, Stratosphere. I'll be there!

  29. Had a great time meeting Jon & a few other AVP'ers. Actually ended up chopping 9 ways for a tidy profit! Looking forward to PHo next week.

  30. Congrats Stump! Were any other AVPers in on that FT deal? It was nice to meet you as well. I thought that was a lot of fun (except when AlaskaGal busted me (kinda). Thanks to everyone who showed up. Next stop...PHo!

  31. My friend Kyle took the most in the chop. He is an AVP'er but I don't know what his AVP name is.

  32. Is Kyle the Texan who chipped up early? If not, who was the guy in the Texas shirt that had a cool AVP hat on? Where can I get one of those? Had a lot of fun at the tourney meeting Avp'ers even though I was short stacked the whole night! was also impressed by the Stratosphere's renovations -- haven't been there in 7 years.

  33. @mf22076

    Yes, that's him.

  34. @JonFriedberg

Just give AlaskaGal a beer and that will solve that problem.....

  35. This is an excellent idea. You should "sticky" the schedule on the front page and at the top of the forums.

  36. I realize it's pretty far off , but a few suggestions for the Feb. 21, 2013 AVP Weekly Showdown (if you decide on that Thursday night):
    1. Orleans, $75 Omaha 8/b tourney, 7:05 pm
    2. M Resort, $55 NL, 6 pm
    3. Mirage, $60 NL, 7 pm
    4. Tropicana, $55 NL, 7 pm
    5. Binions, $60 NL, 8 pm

(Just booked my winter trip so, yes, I will attend wherever the AVP Showdown is scheduled. I also plan to play in the AVP Mixed Game at IP that Sunday night, as usual.)
Hope all the AVPers are doing well.

  37. It looks like I will be playing the Thursday, 8/23 one on Golden Nugget. Hope my flight is one time! Coming in for LVH SuperContest weekend and planning to support AVP and hit the Venetian.

  38. @vinnyboombots

I think you'll need to hit The Palazzo, the Venetian is being remodeled.

  39. I won't be there this week because I'll be out of town.

  40. @TheGameKat

I think you'll need to hit The Palazzo, the Venetian is being remodeled.
I did not know that. Thanks for the heads-up!

  41. Who's in for PH tomorrow??

  42. I'm looking forward to finally attending an AVP tourney. See you all tomorrow night.

  43. Cool, looking forward to meeting you Raz!

  44. Wait, the Golden Nugget is on Saturday? I have to get back here to New Mexico Saturday at noon. I was looking forward to that. Oh well, like the song says, "See You in September."

  45. hope to make it tonite

anyway to tell who is an AVPer? *ill be in my normal attire of a dog shirt and shorts, so easy to recognize*

    Mark

  46. We would like to welcome everyone that plans on attending tonight's 7pm tournament. We are very excited to have been chosen to host this event. Ph Murv will be running the show tonight; please take a second to introduce yourself.

I have noticed some discussion of a last longer amongst AVP'ers. We will also throw in dinner voucher for Earl of Sandwhich to the AVP'er that lasts the longest.

    Good luck everyone!

  47. @PH Chris
    Nice! Have fun everyone!

  48. Is there food tonight? trying to figure out when to leave from work....

  49. Thanks PH Chris...we appreciate that! I'm getting ready to head over, but might be a few minutes late to register. Looking forward to it!

    Jon

  50. I was there...out in 14th. I told them when I registered that I was AVP...Blank look, generic response. "thanks for coming, good luck." I asked my table if anyone was AVP. One guy at other end of table said he was. Upon repeated inquiry, he never divulged his AVP screen name. By the time they switched my table, I was so annoyed by my Planet Hollywood experience (see room review), I wanted to be anywhere except Planet Hollywood's "poker room." When the agro young buck on the button just flat-called my hijack 6bb all in raise ( Q J ) I knew that I was way behind. He flipped over A A The Flop...two diamonds with a J ran out of gas...oh well! :open_mouth: I plan on playing the Golden Nugget AVP date. See you all then? I'm a 50 year old dude in a wheelchair...say hi!

  51. Hi RazCue, I was there too, and wasn't sure who else was from AVP....although one friendly gentleman did introduce himself to me since I was wearing an AVP shirt. We will find a better way for AVPers to identify ourselves. Perhaps we will have the tournament registration folks hand out AVP patches to everyone who says they're from AVP. That will also help with last longers, etc.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you, but hopefully will at the Nugget event!

  52. Hey Raz i was at your table after your move *#9 with the dog shirt*.

Thx to PH Merv for running the tournement, thought it ran very well.

busted out as bubble boy on very interesting hand.

    Mark

  53. Right on, Jon. Barring unforseen circumstances, the Nugget it is. Maybe we should all wear a pink carnation?
MEB2, I was actually gonna ask you if you were AVP, but you kept raising my blinds and all I could think about was if I should re-raise shove on ya  Plus it was so noisy in there. Those drunk peeps going crazy at that penny slot machine everytime they won 2 bucks, lol. Congrats on the deep run. Bubble sucks.

  54. ah yes the penny slot players forgot about them *i have worked in casinos long enough that i can filter some of it out*

sorry on the button raises *well ok not really* but i had a run there where i was getting very good cards on the button..AK, AA, QQ things like that and of course my bubble hand was AQs on the button

wont find out til tomorrow whether i can possibly make it next week.

    Mark

  55. I should be able to make it next week.

  56. We hope so AlaskaGal, you're hosting it!

  57. Let's do this for next week: Introduce yourself to me or Jon and we will give you either an AVP patch or an AVP chip.

  58. What happened to PH? Did anyone besides me show? I got there early. But no one was to be found.

  59. There were several of us there, but apparently no one did a good enough job identifying themselves lol. We will start giving patches to the registration desk or something.

  60. I was playing at table 8. No one was there prior to the start of the tourney and no one stayed around at the break. I was very disappointed that I dedicated one of the limited amount of evenings I had in Vegas this trip to this event and wasted it. If AVP wants these events to be something that brings in outside people then you really must rethink how to make it successful.

I would not recommed that anyone visiting from out of town to plan on going to one of these tourneys unless they were staying at the property and planning on playing the event anyway.

  61. Sorry to hear that HySpade. I will talk to AlaskaGal about how we can come up with a better way to make this a social event in addition to being a poker event. I was pretty disappointed with that aspect of the PH event as well, but am a little more optimistic about upcoming events than you seem to be.

  62. We could all just meet up at the closest bar to the poker room...up to an hour before tourneys.

  63. This is a work in progress. I agree, we need some way to recognize each other as an AVPer. I like the idea of giving out patches or AVP chips to use our wear during the tournaments. I will try to get to the Golden Nugget 30 minutes early on Saturday to hand stuff out. I'll wear an AVP patch so I'll be easy to recognize.

  64. I like it Rob. Good idea!

  65. I think a far more efficient method is to have AlaskaGal dress up as Wonder Woman and stand on a podium and have everyone muster at her feet.

  66. not real sure i like the idea of everyone knowing i have a clue *aka introducing self/wearing something* however i did suggest to Jon about meeting ahead of time *like the bar idea* and also an after the tourney is over event of some kind *maybe bar again though i dont drink*

*also liked the AVP chip idea......at least a hair subtle*

  68. Anyone planning to be at the Flamingo later today? Not sure if I'll be there, may need some arm-twisting.

  69. @Stump12
    I'll be there.

  70. I'll be there!
