Hello everyone. Happy holidays & hopefully a profitable new year for each of you.

Thanks for taking your time to give an opinion to the topic.

If you were considering a move to a specific city/state for live poker (based on your experience or credible facts), which locations would be among your top 3?

I've lived in Atlantic City area for over a decade now and I've done fairly well with poker there. However for several reasons, I'm ready to make a move wether its short term (1-3 years) or long term (3+ years). Obviously Las Vegas NV and Florida area's like West Palm Beach, Miami, & Fort Lauderdale interest me.

I know LA is a good town with rooms like commerce & bicycle but the city of LA doesn't interest me despite how big poker is there.

If you had to choose a home between a city in FL or NV which would each of you choose and a detailed description of why would be great. Which is the best bang for your buck with the best action and worst players. I know they're may be no right or wrong answer. A lot is individual experience based, but I'm eager to hear from each of you.

Run good everyone & again best wishes this new year.

  1. I actually moved to Vegas a year ago in part to play poker as a hobby. I picked Vegas because I liked the variety of rooms available nearby (yes the Greater Miami area has 13 rooms but it's 80 to 90 miles from Palm Beach to the southern end of Miami and traffic can be a mess). I also think that with the WSOP, Venetian Deepstacks and other series in town, Vegas provides a good range of options if you want to "take a shot" at a bigger tournament.

Outside of poker, I liked the variety of restaurants available in Vegas, and the access to hiking and biking areas. When I was looking out here, housing was very affordable (at least buying a house, the rental market is pretty strong), and that also played into my decision. Plus, having been to Florida a number of times, I just was never as comfortable on the Atlantic side as on the Gulf side of the state.

  2. I retired in Vegas 2010. Now that I have been here long enough I quit going to the strip so often. It is hard to get in and out of the strip on weekends and holidays. But not impossible. I don't know much about Florida poker, but they have decent horse racing. OTOH, I can get every thing I want at any casino in Vegas.

The weather is dry, very dry. It gets very hot in the summer. Temperatures can run over 110 for several days, and I have seen it stay over 100 for 48 hours straight. You need industrial air conditioning to stay comfortable. It gets a little cold in the winter. We are expecting snow for New Years Day. Snow is rare, but I saw it the first winter I was here.

Real estate is reasonable. Rents are decent. Crime is all over. Lots of people get run over and killed every day it seems. They hit and run little babies getting off the school bus. I live on the west side. Supposed to be nice. They just shot some poor schmoo at the Walgreens near here. The tourists cause problems downtown and on the strip. Seems like some (most) of the locals are desperate murderous thugs.
