Enjoyable As Always

This is my first trip report. I have been following AVP for several years. I am not much of a intenet chat person but my wife is now on facebook and twiter and electronic comuniation seems like the way a lot of people connect these days. My background in the poker world is very basic, I played in home games, then played in a brick and mortar casino (1998) 2-4 limit. I jumped to no limit 1-2 a few years later. I get to Vegas around 5 times a year. I play alot in Vancouver BC the competition can be tough since 90% are regulars and seem to have money to burn, profitable for good players, if you get a chance to play in this city you won't be disapointed. My wife and I always enjoy our vegas Trips we always stay at Harrahs Properties for at least 3 out of five days of any visit since we get so many free rooms, we then finish it off with the Venetian or the Hotel @MB by far the nicest rooms i have stayed in.
I have sat next to solcalvegasmike and southpointperry and they are very good players, thay can read the table and understand how to play position. I am a recreational player that will have moments of glory and agonizing defeats. As an example I was down $170.00 over 27 hours of play (several sessions Ballys, Flamingo & venetion) on my last trip to Vegas this to me was a good run. Note: I must agree with many of Las Vegas Micheals opinions of poker rooms in Vegas he is very good at rating rooms. I have played in most, and his evaluations are very accurate. I went to the Aria on January 14th and they had 4 people signed up at 11:00 am for their 11:15am tourney,I walked down to the Venetian and they had over 200 for the noon daily, I have found this is by far the best daily in Vegas. We always do a show when we go, Love and Lion King are very good if you get a chance to go they are Worth the $$$. I played golf @ Southern Highlands it is a nice course their are so many great courses in Vegas to choose from, anyway my next trip is late March to coincide with AVP X will be good to put faces to names.
Cheers Gravel

  1. Nice Report. I will read the room recomondations by LVM. I too am making a special trip from the northwest (washington state) to play in the AVP tourn in March. Good Luck & see you there.

  2. What casinos, what times and what game do you play in vancouver? I've played at edgwater in the early bird on a sunday and a couple at the river rock. Didnt really enjoy them to be honest. I know its meant to be serious but its not the same as a big home tourney (we sometimes get 3 tables going) or vegas where i have a bit of fun. I found the players very tough and difficult to read. I suppose thats a good thing really if you want to learn but a bit expensive for me without the free drinks!!

  3. Nice to see Vancity on the boards here! I'm a frequent player in the 1/2 cash games at the Starlight, but will play the Blvd or Rock on occassion. Sometimes the Edge but I've found their room to be a lot more of grind once they moved the room away from the main casino. No more drinking at the tables either, which has taken away the drunks and fish that used to frequent their old poker room. Recently, the Starlight seems to have had the juiciest cash games on late night weekends, especially after hockey games so that's why I've been playing there a lot.

But tomorrow I'm on a flight to Vegas and couldn't be more excited! The games in this city are a rock garden compared to the $1/2 action I've seen my last few trips to Vegas. I'll take the variance and volatility any day...the chance to sit back and play more of an ABC game against regular folk compared to a table of rocks is always welcome. My previous trip, and only post on this website I think, I really wanted to play some mixed games and wanted to play in a Thursday night HORSE game at the Monte Carlo. It never got started, so I spent that night and the bulk of my trip playing $1/2 NL at MGM. This trip I'm staying at the Dirty Bird and hoping for some good games there, the IP, or Bally's. I was also hoping to play in the Sunday tourney at the V but don't think it will be running with the DSE. I'll still probably be checking out the festivities at the V on most days though. My plan is to play as much $1/2 NL as possible; an opptional $4/8 or $8/16 limit session at the V (depending on cash game availability with all of their tourneys) and maybe the Caesar's Saturday afternoon tourney. Maybe the IP on Sunday just to see what's going on. We shall see...looking forward to this trip!

And while I don't post here very often...thanks to LVM and co. for running such a great site. I love reading the trip reports and stories from poker players all over, and maybe this time I can share some stories of my own when I'm back.

  4. @Count Cragula
Really, no drinking at the table? Gads, what is the world coming to?

  5. Played in the early bird at edgewater on sunday just for fun. The place was dead! The road closures and the stuff for the olympics has shut the place down. maybe the athletes will pop in.

I dont play much. Just home games and micro stake tourneys online. Then every now and then play in a casino tourney for experience. God to i need it! Thats why i loved the vegas games. I could losen up, get drunk and have some fun. Not at the van city casinos. Too serious for my liking.
