My flight landed at around 5:30 on Thursday 5/27. I was checked in around 7 pm. Of course my cell phone was dead so I tossed it on the charger. The first thing I did was grab my allotment of cash for the evening and throw the rest into the safe I headed downthe harrah's poker room. It was dead really, just a few full 1/2 NL tables. Being that I was starving I thought about chipotle. I never made it there. Just outside the poker room door is a $1 wheel of fortune slot. I turned $50 into $400. A quick stop at a bj table yielded a small loss of $50. I finally made it to Chipotle. One chicken burrito later and I was re-energized. My cousin works across the street at the Love show so I decided I would check out the Mirage room. I grabbed a players card from the nearby desk and let me tell you that I love this room. It is very well run, the drink service was good! What I didnt love is the cards! I was so card dead. The action was pretty loose at the table but I left to pick up my refreshed cell phone. So running total is Slots +350, blackjack -50, poker ( 3 scotches) -30. I decided I had to get some thing accomplished this evenining so I made it to Walgreens by the venetian and picked up some supplies. Supplies in hand in my room I go over to Carnaval Court for some drinking and dancing. Carnaval court closes and its off to the Rockhouse for some more of the above. Next thing I know its 6 am and I am eating Burger King.

Friday:
I play poker all day and into the night. I lose 100 at harrah's being card dead and across the street at Mirage I make ~85 before I meet my cousin for drinks. Seated one seat to my left was an Hispanic Internet pro with around $1500 in chips. He indicated he was playing Event 3 on Saturday and was only in for $150. I watch people literrally give him money when he obviously had overpairs to their TPTK. I manage to take ~85 off him when I reraise with TPTK on an A high flop. My cousin get off his shift and we make it to a seating area near the sports book and enjoy a few drinks. 3 hours later I come back and he had just busted. Noone on the table would tell me what happened, and there was no obvious person who had taken his chips. Maybe a hit and run. By this time I am drunk and decide to search for even more drunks. I sit down at Osheas and proceed to get sucked and sucked out again. KK loses to A6 when Ace his the river. KK again loses when a short stack shoves for around $85 and turns an ace. I am stuck around $200. I watch an older gentlemen win situations like this and is up around $600. The annoying part is that he gets up and leaves for like half hour at a time, giving noone any chance at his money, and noone a chance to sit down. He is basically a dead spot at the table.

Saturday:
I dont get up in time to play the Venetian Deep Stack I wanted to play in, so I tram/bus it down to Binions. I spot TBC talking to someone in a Tigers Hat. They have a 210 buy in with 15k in chips and half hour levels that i buy into. I bust out around 60th. I am still card dead. If I recall I get it all in with aj (best hand in hours) and meet aq. good night. I like downtown. I had a good meal of a chili-dog and fries for like 5 bucks and it was a laid back atmosphere. I grab a players card for golden nugget and binions while I am downthere. Eventually I grab the Deuce back to Mirage. I totally miss the UFC fight that night even though I am a pretty big fan, but I am glad I missed Evans win. Being a big Michigan fan, I hate all things Michigan state, especially one who has behaved like him on TV. I end up playing more at the Mirage, and at harrah's losing around nothing but drinking more.

Sunday:
I wake up around 9, super hungover, but want to make it to the RIO. I sit down at a 2/5 game that is super loose. One guy has 5k in chips on the rail and 500 in play. I blind down about 50 until a tough hand comes up. 5 people are in for 25 and I look down at 45c. I call. I flop the wheel with a spade flush draw. Checks to me and I bet about 100. The short stack who was under the gun shoves and I insta call a raise of about 100 more. Turn is a spade and of course he shows j7 of spades. I personally wouldnt go all in on a flush draw with only 25 of my own money invested and am tilted. I decide to buy into Event 3. If I lose I will be low on money for the trip. I dont think I am ready for 2/5 at this point, as that beat bothers me too much. I am a different player at 1/2 or 1/3. Loosing most of my stack on a beat doesnt phase me at 1/2.

I draw table 111 for event 3. My desire is to play tight position poker and survive. At the 1k events you only start with 3k in chips but have hour levels starting with 25-25. Early on I make a mistake. I thought I was calling 200 so I toss out 200 in chips. It turns out it was 600 and my hand was not worth 400 more on a draw. 200 goes bye bye. I literally dont play another hand for the rest of the first 2 levels. At the start of level 3 Phil Hellmuth sits down. He is pretty sedate, he had just busted out of the $50k limit event. He has a discussion with the assistant tournament director regarding a rule thats announced. Apparently the 2nd time you dont show up for an event at the WSOP you get removed for the whole WSOP. This would be alarming I am assuming if you like to buy in ahead of time while playing other tournaments. Apparently there is a players committee and he was inquiring whether they came up with that rule. The whole table is text messaging their buddies apparently planning to play garbage hands against him to see if he will blow up. I am small blind with kq of diamonds. I fold to his utg raise, not wanting to get involved with a big pot out of position. I double up twice during the day, going all in on the button with AJ each time, winning the coin flip. I sit at Minh the Master's table for the last two hours. He was the only one drinking. Most of the time he was talking about catching Phil in WSOP cashes. What a fun guy to play with. The rest of us were drinking redbull like water or just water. I blind down to 8900 at the end of day 1. 471 players remain, 441 get paid. I vow to get paid in day 2. I split a cab back to harrah's since it was past 1am so the shuttle was done. Exhausted but unable to sleep I eventually get up around 9:30. I shower and grab first shuttle back to the RIO. I eat at the Sao Paulo cafe and chat with an asian gentlemen who I had played with. He was still alive. I sit down at a 1/3 table before the tourney starts and make around 80.
Day 2 starts: I fold my way into the money. Losing like 2 people a minute I decide to only play aa or kk, all other's I am folding. Eventually table busts. I survive hand for hand. Somehow I get up to 50 k in chips when the following happens. I get ak in late position. MP goes all in for like 18k, I call with AK and lose to a 6 on the river. A few hands later, UTG raises, another guy goes all in and I look down and qq and insta shove. A gentlemen to my left mutters under his breath that the UTG raise was trying to steal and he shoves. He flips over KK and I am busted when no Q comes to save me. I finish 150th and pocket 3364. Instantly I am up for trip. I decide to leave the rio. I throw 3364 into the the safe and have remaining about 600. I head over to the mirage with the goal of drinking heavily, telling the table and the waitress so. I drop around 50. It was a crazy night. A gentlemen sit down who likes to go all in blind alot and call most everything. He flashes me 15k in chips but never does a hand to get paid off arrive. I decide to celebrate my win and donate to the college fund of the Spearmint Rhino. Money well spent, I wake up only with the 3364 i made sitting in the safe.

Tuesday: I buy another plane ticket that takes me home on friday morning, otherwise I was leaving that night. I am otherwise worthless that day. I realize around midnight that I hadnt eaten anything. I go to bed early

Wed: I make ~680 at the mirage during the Aces cracked promotion. Only one hand I can recall, there was lots of bad poker. I had aq and someone called me down to the river after I flopped 2 pair and turn the boat. I also play at the rio and make nothing at 1/3. I profit 200 at 3 card poker

Thursday: Not much poker, its my last day. I meet my cousin for lunch at Hash House a Go Go and have the best bisquits and gravy I have ever had. Thanks to a harrah's comp the meal costs me 13 dollars including a decent tip. I sit down at 3 card poker and hit a straight flush leaving the table with a 400 profit. I lose a small amount at the IP poker room but get a few beers in me. I play 3 card poker for hours at harrah's but dont make anything. I hit up the mirage for a short session but cant get anything going.

I jump in a cab and head for the aiport, my flight is at 2 am and I wonder why I am not staying the whole weekend. I still have a few clean shirts but would have had to wash my underwear by handed. I arrive in D.C. around noon. Its super humid and nasty. I should have stayed longer.

I brought 3k with me, and left with 4k. I was not frugal. Best vacation of my life. There's lots of money to be made there. I am now plotting how I could move there. My job lets me WFH so the plan is to move out there and play poker on the weekends to suppplement my income. Not included here were me donking cash to video poker machines, slot and drinks. Those all took place as well as some other winning poker sessions that I cant recall much about.

  1. Nice report. I am thinking about playing in the last $1000 event on July 1st or 2nd. What did you think about the structure? Was the table playing pretty tight?

  2. congrats on the tourney cash and good time. Any thoughts on Phil's play? anything stand out?

  3. Congratulations on your WSOP cash. I was in town the same time as you. As I was sitting and playing cash games with many of the players that busted out on day 1. I came to the conclusion, that I would probably be able to cash in a $1000 buy in WSOP event. This may be cocky, but the players that I met were not all that good and many lasted until late in day 1. Again, congratulations on you cash.

  4. I thought the structure was ok. It was hour levels and started out pretty slow. From what I heard, the structure was better than it used to be. The deep stack events running right now are probably better values, but smaller prize pools and dont award bracelets. 99 percent of people playing were not drinking, and for the most part were playing rock solid tournament poker. Raise or fold, no calling for the most part. The ones who were loose ( a lot claimed to be internet pro's) did not last long or did really well and had lots of chips. Some play to win, some play to cash. I really should not be buying into 1k tournaments with my bankroll but it was worth every penny. I feel like I gained a lot of confidence and can play with anyone. At the end of the day it is just poker and everyone plays the same game. I feel like I learned a lot and still have a lot to learn. My live tournament experience was limited to local donkaments in bars here in Virginia. I have never played in such a lengthy tournament. I was not used to some of the rules and made mistakes such as tossing out a single $500 chip and not saying raise with it stuck being call. I survived by folding tons of hands, not my usual style. It would have been nice to have more than 20bb past level 4, it would have made things more relaxing.

  5. Congrats on your cash! You vacation does indeed sound like the best ever. I like how you mixed serious poker and some relaxing drinking. Also Chipotle. Damn i love burriotos.

I live in Bmroe so I know the crappy humidity of which you speak. Good luck moving to dry vegas.
