No fold'em hold'em around a conference 2/16-2/22

I'll leave out everything except the poker details here.

First stop was IP for 2-4LHE on 2/16. Odd little room but friendly dealers and staff. Cocktail waitresses wore some lovely little outfits. Table was a mix of folks including two girls there on a bachelorette party that were quite good. The poker was bad and suck out after suck out got me down to an all-in. Turned my $7 left into $50 and walked out with a buzz and a loss.

2/17 I visited TI for the first time. There was a short wait for 2-4LHE but everything was managed very efficiently while a tournament was going and other cash games were in progress. The table was wild. Frequent straddles and capped pre-flop action. A guy on the end who called himself Batman was raking in chips with oddball hands. Another drunken guy on my end was tipping the dealer for giving Batman the cards to suck out on him. Did see quad 3's hit. I was up and down but managed to walk with a whopping $4 profit and a buzz after the table got short-handed.

Meandered down the strip and ended up at IP again. Ended up at a really drunk table...at 4 in the afternoon. Nothing of note for me here except more losing. Did see an interesting situation where the 2 seat mucked his hand. One card ended up going into the 1 seats hand. Showdown had the 1 seat flipping over three cards 7-2 for two pair (yep to the river with 72o) and then the King of diamonds. Hand was declared dead and pot awarded to the 8 seat. Dude got really pissed and decided to take it out by drinking a bunch more beer.

I know I played a little at Excalibur (my hotel for the trip that night) but don't remember much. Lost but not much.

2/18 Played a 4 hour session at MGM. Had a local at the table that had the day off and decided to play rag hand after rag hand and have them hit. No big hands yet again and a $60 loss.

2/19 Went to the Golden Nugget. Short wait for a 2-4 seat. Room was cramped and over-flowing. Staff was very nice, dealers more than competent, and cocktail service adequate. Game was 2-4 with a half kill. Hadn't played a kill game before and liked the mix-up.

I was down about $40 when I find pocket aces on the button. Raised it up and had about 6 callers. Flop was rainbow with an ace. Checked top set and someone bet $2. Just called. Turn was a 2nd club which worried me. Bet $4 and ended up three-ways to the river. River was Ace of clubs. Bingo. One person bet out, I raised and was called. They had the king of clubs for nut flush but my quad aces took it down. That's when I also found out that GN had high hand jackpots. Quad aces netted me an additional $213. Not bad for a low-roller. Cashed out about 45 minutes later with a tidy profit.

About midnight I stumbled over to Binions for 2-4. Played here for close to four hours. Up and down with no major hands of note. Left the game when it became the holding area for grumpy NL players and a perpetual political argument. Down $19 for the session.

2/20 First session at the Excalibur I had pocket aces on my second hand. They of course got cracked by 65o. Spin the wheel and recouped my $18 in the pot and a huge $2 profit. Ended the session up $12

Second session started about 11pm when they opened up a new 2-4 table. I was slowly bleeding off chips and found pocket 5s. Wish I could tell you more about the progress of the hand but I found they had Blue Moon so I was partaking again. Flop came out with a 5. Checked to turn. Turn put two spades on the board. There was a bet and raise and I called. River was my miracle 5. Again raised the intial bet and had a caller with a mid-range flush. Spun the wheel and cashed $25 this time. Left the session with a $40 profit or so.

Unfortunately didn't play 2/21 at all. I have decided that I need to change games. I'm no star by any means but raises, re-raises, etc. aren't respected at these limits. I was hesitant to try NL this trip due to its duration-didn't want to blow my wad early on and walk around the rest of the trip. Next trip I'm going to seek out 3-6 or 4-8

  1. definitely move up to 4/8. Try the 4/8 game at Wynn as it is a very good game. Good players so you don't get sucked out too often by bad players playing bad hands. Some good players but can definitely be beat as well. I think you would enjoy it much more.

  2. Nice run and sweet hand with the quad aces!

Trust me, you don't want a game where players start "respecting your raises". I do however, recommend 4/8 or higher because the rake isn't as detrimental at that level.

Priceless! Drunk table at 4:00 p.m. This is why I absolutely LOVE VEGAS

  5. I will leave out every thing except the important details.

    @packbacker

Can you now see the error in your game? You said it yourself. (Re)Raises are not respected so why did you fail to make them when you have the best hand. There is no value in slow playing.

I did a shot of Tequila at 9am at the IP, that place is frikin awesome. (No one wanted to do a stunt man with me.)

  6. Simple answer- because I was drinking! Normally don't while playing poker but realized last year that 2-4 sober was maddening. You are exactly correct, though. I would wager that 80% of hands ended up showing down...a 2-4 re-raise would have been nothing in retrospect.

You were on the button with pocket aces. Raised pre-flop. Got 6 callers. Then you say you checked the top set and someone bet $2?
My question is: How did you check from the button (last to act) then have someone bet $2?? Also, why in a limit game would you let them draw at at all? Maybe to have the chance to save the reraise on the turn when the betting level is higher and keep the strength of your hand hidden? However, is that small amount gain and worth losing the pot to some fish who will pick up a draw on the turn and see the river?

Nice damn hand though with quad aces!!! However, it may have went down.
