Too Many Cowboys, Not Enough Poker

A couple of observations before I get into the poker part.

1. I have never seen so many cowboy hats in my life. I didn't know that many cowboys still existed.

2. It is highly unlikely that I will ever make enough money in 3 hours of poker at 1/2 NL table to offset the damage my wife can do at a spa/salon in 3 hours.

On to poker.

Played exclusively at the Monte Carlo this trip due to obligations with wife and family that live in Vegas. I liked the atmosphere of the room and the room manager (whose name I believe was Jim) was pleasant and did a good job.

I was lucky enough (or so I thought) to get into a fresh 1/2 NL game on Thursday evening that included a guy who didn't know a full house beat a straight (honest!) and 2 tipsy women who were clearly fish. I bought in for the $150 of profit I made at a blackjack table, won some early small pots and built my stack up to about $250 until I got sucked out on twice by the fish who called holding anything to put me under 100. Busted out when I pushed all in preflop with AQ for my last 64 with and was called by a guy sitting with about 100. He shows Q,10o. WTF? You guessed it 10 comes and after 6 hours I've had enough for the night.

Woke up Friday morning and played the 9 AM tournament for a $50 buy in for 2000 chips with 20 minute blinds. 23 runners. Finished 5th after my A,9 went down to a K,J.

After tourney, I get into a 2/4l game for about an hour waiting for another 1/2nl game to open up. Should have stayed at limit game. Won 40 in an hour at 2/4 limit before jumping to a 1/2 nl game where I was card dead for 2 hours. Only hand I caught was holding KJ suited and caught j and 4 flush on flop. I raised everone out of the hand except guy who called and showed AJ. Needless to say, I didn't catch and doubled him up. Done for the day.

Saturday moring I didn't do much better but managed to scrape together a profit of $40 and qualify for the 1 PM freeroll that I couldn't play in because of other obligations. Jim was nice enough to extend the invite to use the freeroll to me when I come back out in February with my buddies.

Overall poker losses came in at about $325(not nearly as much as the spa losses) but I am looking forward to coming back in Febraury when I can put in some serious hours and play a few different rooms.

Good luch to all and thanks for reading!

Reminds me of my first trip to Vegas with the sig other. I was given a four hour window to play poker Sunday a.m. at Bellagio (where we were staying). I manage to rack up a $650 profit ... and was informed at lunch that roughly that much had been spent at the Caesars Forum Shops!

Good report, better luck next time!

  3. You generally want the cowboys at the poker tables. Generally it is a good time of year to play. Good report.

  4. Barts: Have been unable to play at MC because never have a $3-6 or $4-8 limit game. Did they have any while you were there? Nice room. How is it to play in?? Thanks.

  5. Alf:

Can't say I noticed as I play mostly 1/2 NL. I don't recall anything more than 2/4 L. There was, believe it or not, 2 tables of H.O.R.S.E going on there on a Thursday night. Prior to this trip, I played a couple SNG there about 18 months ago. I must say, I did like the room eventhough it was on the small side. I will play there a bit when I go back in a couple months.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
