Amazing trip during WSOP

Flew in to Vegas for a trip June 18-22 with a friend of mine. Happy coincidence that it was occurring the current WSOP.

We were able to get to see most of events # 32, 33, 36 final tables and was truly amazed at the atmosphere and vibe of the final table. We also walked around and saw many celebs at the Event #34, Pot Limit Omaha (Mike Sexton, Daniel Negreanu, Ben Lamb, etc).

Poker room at Rio was busy all the time, along with that monstrosity in the pavilion rooms. OMG the cash room had wall to wall players & tables..Sounded like a machine gun going off with all the players diddling their chips...

Headed to the Venetian on day 2 and had a modest winning session. Sadly tried to play pkt Q's cute and lost half my stack, but otherwise held my own and up $240 after a few hours.. Headed back in time to see Penn & Teller. What great seats and excellent show. I'd seen a few of the bits before but 90% was new to me so really enjoyed it.

The rest of the week decided to play some craps at Gold Coast, modest profits, then turn around and lose it that night at the poker room at Rio. What a shark fest! I will be totally honest and telly you that I was most definitely the weakest player at any of the tables i played at, but was proud enough to have held my own again some very good talent. I was up in 3 of 4 sessions and literally busted out each time with set over set or flush over flush. Came back happy (not ecstatic), but happy with my game and played again/with some really amazing players.

Lots of banter regarding the tournaments, and enjoyed very much listening to the people and their stories (yeah a lot of bad beats!), but I think overall 99% of the players I met were friendly. There is always that 1%.

Otherwise it was one of the best visits to Vegas and I may make this an annual event just to see the throng that is the WSOP, but I do have one big beef.

During the final tables, many of the supporters are really out of control. Drunken behaviour, profanities, etc made it much less enjoyable that it should have been. Security did little and management did even less until it got out of hand. I was also disappointed in the players themselves for not trying to control their posse's. The worst was Event #36. The winner was a Brit and his fans in the crowd were more like soccer hooligans. To call them rude, drunk and obnoxious would be tame. I heard from someone beside us that they had already been removed from the final table viewing seats, but with a change in security wandered back and were totally out of control. They were asked to keep it quiet once the cards were dealt but they barely did and after an hour still nothing had been done. Very shameful behaviour, and the WSOP should be admonished for letting it go on that long. Totally unacceptable.

I have to say out of the 4 final tables I saw 3 had issues with the crowds watching. The only one that was respectable was the HORSE final, with Helmuth and Ivey. Guess I'm just too old, but it was very disappointing.

  1. You're supposed to win at the poker tables and lose in the pits, not the other way around! Lol. I keep hearing about the final table crowds. Apparently there have been some heated situations between final table players and cheering sections. Sometimes people mistake FT's for rival sporting events! Regardless, glad you had a great trip, and thanks for sharing on AVP!

  2. Nice trip report.

I am not sure if it was the luck of the draw or what, but I have seen quite a few final tables and only occasionally has the crowd been a negative factor.
