A Longtime Customer’s Perspective on Ocean’s Eleven

I still remember the first time I walked into Ocean’s Eleven. I was genuinely impressed. It’s a unique room, especially for the San Diego area, with a large, lively setup and a ton of action. More importantly, it had something that many larger card rooms lack: a positive atmosphere.
Unlike most of the bigger, more corporate environments in California, where player frustration can feel constant, Ocean’s used to feel different. Players were proud of their local room. That is an extremely rare thing to see in large rooms. Of course, there were the usual complaints about bad beats or tough sessions, but that’s just part of poker. Overall, people enjoyed being there, and that pride showed.
As someone who has spent a significant amount of time playing at Ocean’s Eleven and has quite literally grown up as a player in this room, I’ve had the opportunity to watch it evolve over the years. Unfortunately, the overall feel has changed, and not for the better.
Today, the atmosphere feels noticeably heavier. That sense of pride among players has faded, replaced by a growing frustration. The room no longer feels like a fun, local hub for poker; instead, it increasingly resembles the more transactional, less player-friendly environments that many people try to avoid.
A big part of this shift seems to come from a series of small policy decisions that, individually, may seem minor, but collectively have had a real impact on the player experience.
For example, not adjusting rake for short-handed games late at night feels unnecessarily punitive. Similarly, policies around player tracking and promotions have become rigid in ways that feel unfair. Recently, I experienced a situation where I provided my player card, but due to a dealer oversight, I was not logged in. Under previous practices, this could be corrected. Now, even when the mistake is clearly not the player’s fault, there is no flexibility to make it right.
While this may seem like a small issue on paper, it matters to players, especially when promotions are structured around tracked hours. More importantly, it reflects a broader shift away from customer-first decision-making.
There are other examples as well: menu changes that remove player-favorite items, policies in place that punish dealers for talking in the box (which I'm almost certain is illegal and goes against first amendment rights) or a general sense that players are being charged or restricted in more areas than before. Individually, none of these decisions define the room, but together, they create the feeling of being “nickel and dimed,” and that perception has real consequences.
You can already see it reflected in game availability. There are nights when higher-stakes games struggle to run or maintain consistency, and that’s not something that used to happen as often. Players notice these changes, and they adjust their behavior accordingly.
This isn’t written out of anger, but out of genuine disappointment, and concern. Ocean’s Eleven is a great room with a strong foundation, and it has meant a lot to many of us who have spent years playing here. That’s exactly why it’s difficult to see it move in this direction.
I truly believe that many of these issues are fixable. A little more flexibility, a stronger focus on player experience, and a willingness to revisit certain policies could go a long way in restoring the atmosphere that once made this room special.
I hope this is received in the spirit it’s intended: not as criticism for its own sake, but as feedback from a loyal customer who wants to continue enjoying, and supporting, Ocean’s Eleven for years to come.
